Digipak Analysis.
The genre of music that I will be doing is Metalcore. The artists that are the influences for this analysis are the British bands Bring Me The Horizon and Bullet For My Valentine, and the American band Trivium.
Albums.
The albums that I am using are 'Ascendency' by Trivium, 'The Poison' by Bullet For My Valentine and 'Suicide Season' by Bring Me The Horizon. The reason why I had picked these specific albums is because all three of them are amazing albums for the music side of it for the artist.
Ascendency- Trivium.
The colours of this album are mainly red, yellow, blue and black. The text is an orange and blue customised fonted text. The image depicts a fallen angel with burining wings and being mummified with a punk-style haircut. It is also a standard type of drawn artwork. All this shows is that the album is a dark, real life and personal album for both the listener and the band. There isn't really a fashion or an image connected to this album cover. The iconoraphy in this album cover shows that the punk-style hairstyle of the mummified figure shows the punk rock genre as one of the many roots of the music.
The Poison- BFMV.
The colours are black, white and red. The text is a white gothic-style customised font. The image shows a dead cartoon girl on the floor with a shadow over her. The style of artwork is that it is cartoon artwork. The connotations of this shows that the album is dark, real life, personal and relevant to the music. The fashion and/or image that is connected to this artwork is that the artwork itself is related to the lyrics to some of the songs on the album. The iconography in this album show that the black and red colours are the black and red colours relate to the style of the genre.
Suicide Season- BMTH.
The colours are red, black, white and grey. The text is a big, bold, faded grey over the image on the album cover. The artwork for this album is a photo of a girl with her organs in her hands. The connotations of this album cover shows the dark part of the lies & decipt within life, as well as love & hate. The fashion/image of this artwork suggests a well dressed girl with her guts hanging out. This shows a deeper, darker side to her and also the album. The iconography in this album cover is that the white background allows the black and red to stand out.
What do you typically find on the front and back of the digipak?
The main things that are usually on the front and back of the album is the record label; symetrical colour schemes; song titles, length and bonus features; and also typically an image of the band.
Theories of the genre.
The typical theories of the Metalcore genre include having the bands set up with being either fully-male or with a female keyboardist in the background; the use of dark colours, mainly black and red; the use of a narrative/performance music video; and also artistic album covers which are usually drawn and have dark colours used within them.
