A2 Media Studies Music Video: Brief History

Mindmap Of Genre.

Brief History Of Metalcore.

Metalcore is a genre that originated in the late 1980’s and throughout the 1990’s when bands were combining Thrash Metal and Hardcore Punk. Bands that did this include Agnostic Front and Suicidal Tendencies.

The conventions of Metalcore that are essential include the use of breakdowns to make the music slower so that the energy of the song is express after it; the structure of the songs; the lyrics and also how the instruments are used. The breakdown is used in Metalcore and its smaller genres, like Deathcore and Mathcore, to create the atmosphere that is mainly used live to make a ‘Wall Of Death’ within the mosh pit. It has now been used in the music itself as the bridge to line up the instruments for clean vocals to also be sung, before it goes back to being heavier and more scream oriented again.
The main artists in Metalcore are Bullet For My Valentine, Eyes Set To Kill, Killswitch Engage, Trivium and also Sonic Syndicate. The main songs in Metalcore are Tears Don’t Fall by BFMV, Darling By Eyes Set To Kill, My Curse by KsE, Pull Harder On The Strings Of Your Martyr by Trivium and also Jack Of Diamonds by Sonic Syndicate. The reason why these artists and songs are the most influential is because, for example, BFMV use melody within the screaming of the lyrics, especially through the same vocalist. The most important example of this is in Tears Don’t Fall because they made the music video relevant to the lyrics. They are also influential because they write lyrics about reality within life and personal experiences. Another artist out of these that is influential is Eyes Set To Kill because they have a mixture of harsh male vocals and clean female singing and the use of naturalism in their music videos.
