There are three main types of music video. There is the narrative type, the performance type and also the narrative and performance type.
Narrative Type of Music Video.
The narrative type of music video is a type that gives us a story within the music video.
The conventions of this type includes:
. The dramatisation of the song through the style of a story.
. It uses characters.
. It usually has a linear narrative.
. It uses conventions from films and T.V. Programmes.
and also . The video 'illustrates' the lyrics of the song.

Performance Type of Music Video.
A performance music video consists of a band or artists in a video that has either live footage or footage of the preparation for a live concert.
The conventions of performance-oriented music videos include:
. The focus on the musicians or the singer as a figurehead of influence.
. The emphasis on the performance and the persona of the artist.
. It maybe set in a studio or at a concert.
and also . The video emphasises the 'star qualities' of the band to show the audience what they are like in terms of performing with their instruments.

Narrative + Performance Music Video.
A narrative + performance music video is a music video that uses the influences from both the narrative-type of music video and also the performance-type of music video as well.
The conventions of this type of video is that the editing technique is centre on cross-cutting between the two diiferent types of music video that makes this type.
